5G already changing smartphone user behaviour

A New report by Ericsson ConsumerLab has revealed the impact 5G is already having on smartphone users worldwide and what they expect the technology to deliver in the future.

Indoor coverage is one of the focus areas to emerge from the consumer research, with one-in-five 5G users already reducing Wi-Fi use on their phones indoors because of the benefits of 5G mobile connectivity.

The report, titled: “Five Ways to a Better 5G,” is the result of the largest global 5G-consumer study to date. It covered consumer sentiment and perception in 26 markets – including the US, China, South Korea, and the UK – the Ericsson ConsumerLab study methodology is representative of 1.3 billion smartphone users globally, including 220 million 5G subscribers.

The report explored key trends behind the adoption, use and perception of consumers with and towards 5G.

A key finding revealed that even by the end of 2020, increased awareness of service and value benefits had resulted in 22 per cent more smartphone users with 5G-ready handsets upgrading to 5G subscriptions.

The report also highlighted how 5G is already beginning to trigger new user behaviors. In addition to reducing Wi-Fi use, early adopter 5G users also spend an average of two hours more on cloud gaming and one hour more on augmented reality (AR) apps per week compared to 4G users.

However, while 5G users are satisfied with the speed, about 70 per cent are dissatisfied with the availability of innovative services and new apps. Consumers said they are willing to pay 20 to 30 per cent more for 5G plans bundled with digital service use cases.

According to the report, COVID-19 lockdowns and movement restrictions mean that the vast majority of 5G early adopters’ regular experiences with the technology have been indoors.

JAMB sets deadline, others for 2020/2021 admissions

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), has said all admissions into the nation’s tertiary institutions for 2020/2021 academic session would end by June 15, 2021.

According to the board, the decision was collectively taken at a virtual meeting held with heads of tertiary institutions in the country. The announcement was contained in a statement made available to journalists yesterday.

JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, said the meeting with the institutions was aimed at knowing the level they had reached on the 2020/21 admissions scale.

“After a robust and insightful deliberation, members collectively agreed that all public universities are expected to finish their admissions on or before 15th May 2021, while the private universities and all IEIs, polytechnics and colleges of education would complete theirs at the agreed date of 15th June 2021,” the statement said.

Oloyede reiterated that the chosen deadlines remained sacrosanct and binding on all institutions as the board would not tolerate any breach of the collective decision reached the meeting.

He said the board would announce, in a week’s time, the commencement date for the sale of application documents for the 2021/2022 academic session.

The registrar urged all institutions to adhere strictly to all advisories issued to them on inter/intra-university transfers, foreign inter-university transfers and fresh foreign candidates, change of programmes and institutions and other essential processes related to admission.

He said the directive was necessary to avoid unnecessary bickering that could endanger the future of innocent candidates and their subsequent mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).Oloyede explained that the transfer of candidates within institutions locally or internationally is an acceptable process as approved by the senate or council of the respective institutions but said that due process must be followed.

According to him, the board, as a responsible organisation and gatekeeper, would not allow the process to be circumvented to allow unqualified candidates gain access to our institutions.

“JAMB would not be a party to any improper transfer or breach of set guidelines. Adequate measures or checks must be done to verify if such candidates meet minimum requirements or possess the prerequisite qualifications to be in the institution in the first instance.”

JAMB CAPS 2020/2021: How to ACCEPT or REJECT Admission Offer

This is to inform all the candidates seeking admission into the various universities/polytechnics/colleges/other tertiary institutions in Nigeria that the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has activated the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS) portal where UTME and Direct Entry candidates can accept/reject their admission offer and also monitor their admission.

JAMB admission policy states that all admission would be made online through the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS); consequently, all candidates seeking admission into Universities, Polytechnics, Colleges of Education and Other tertiary institutions in Nigeria for the 2020/2021 Academic Session are advised to visit the JAMB CAPS portal to check their admission status and also indicate the acceptance or rejection of their admission.

The JAMB CAPS streamlines the Admissions Process, addresses the challenges associated with the manual approach, restores the autonomy of the tertiary institutions concerning admissions, makes candidates the focus and empowers them with information on available choices of institutions and programmes, expands admission opportunities, eliminates multiple admissions, and provides easily retrievable data for decision making and research on the Education Sector in the country.

Some institutions may not publish the list of candidates admitted into their various programmes on their own portal or notice board. So, admission seekers are advised to check JAMB CAPS to track their admission status continually.

    About JAMB CAPS

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) created the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS) platform to automate the Admissions Process into the tertiary institutions in Nigeria. It also ensures quality control, transparency and credibility of the admission process.

The Central Admission Processing System (CAPS) is expected to make provision for a ‘market place’ in the JAMB portal where institutions can go and ‘request for students in Nigeria who score their cut off points.’

The system is such that institutions can only admit those who meet their cut off points. If a candidate fails to meet the cut off mark, that student would certainly be denied admission irrespective of the candidate’s connection.

CAPS not only automates the process, but some other innovations are also being introduced. And these include:

    • opportunities for candidates to confirm provisional admissions, thus eliminating cases of candidates abandoning admissions;
    • market place to enable institutions to source candidates from the available pool based on various criteria such as JAMB score, State, Local Government and even gender of the candidates
    •  the requirement for all awaiting O/L results candidates to upload their results into the JAMB portal before being considered for admission
    • admissions can be processed in batches and instantaneously, with candidates being able to check their admission status at any point in time on the JAMB portal.
